Working with Sheila Barnes* in individual lessons in Perugia at the Monastery Casa Monteripido is an opportunity to explore in depth aspects of vocal technique and repertoire at a leisurely pace, in a beautiful setting where free time between sessions offers the chance to explore historic Perugia, or time to study and take in the learning of new things, or to take excursions to local attractions like Assisi and Lake Trasimeno.

Rooms in the monastery are ensuite and comfortable; a kitchen is available and lunches are provided by a catering company, a charity, used for monastery events, the home-cooked food lovingly prepared by excellent Italian “foodies”. September is an ideal month to be in Umbria, as temperatures are lower than July & August but there is still a “summer-time” feel without the heat stroke-effect of high summer. There is a pool not far from the monastery easily accessed by foot, bus or car.

Dates for 2023 fall into the period 3-16 September. This is a Sunday to a Saturday. Arrive on Sunday and dine together alfresco. Monday onward begin your package of lessons. You may wish to have one lesson per day for 5 days, or two lessons per day for a shorter period, or one lesson every other day, with the chance to practice in between lessons; in short, you tailor the package to you. The only “requirement” is to spend at least 4 days at Casa Monteripido. And of course you are welcome to be present for the entire 13 days.

Partners/friends/family also welcome. The monastery has ample rooms during that period, the only time of the year they do!

The cost of single rooms is 24 euros per night, with a small (2 euro) fee on top; the cost of meals last year was 10 euros for a 3-course lunch every day, brought to us; this year’s pricing will be close to that, and available closer to the time. Dietary restrictions can be catered for.

Lesson costs are based on the number of lessons taken.

These figures are based on one lesson per day, no matter how long the lesson, and these lessons do tend to be extended!
